Freedoms

Over at Crusader Rabbit is a link to a story of a childhood in the 50s/60s.  At least I am assuming that is the time period.  Such freedoms we had as children. My shoes came off in summer - every year until I was in my 20s.  I never hurt my feet, with the exception of one bee sting.  Since my Dad was military, we moved pretty much every summer.  When we arrived at our new posting, we would spend the time exploring our new surroundings.  I believe that is one reason why I have an excellent sense of direction, and why I get great comfort from a walk in the woods.  My mother never drove us any where - we walked.   In fact, I don't think we saw our parents in the summer, except at dinner.
I have often thought how sorry it was that my daughter could never know such unbridled freedom growing up.

Over at Blazing Cat Fur is this related story

When I die I may think, "Why didn't I paddle more new rivers".
I won't think, I wish I'd played more Warcraft.

I doubt that, John. You will remember the rivers you did paddle. I love my memories of the mud puddles i sat in, and later the mud baths my school mates and i had!
